The first time I tried to make gloves it was a complete disaster. I didn't have a pattern but thought "how hard can it be" and traced my hand, cut out two copies, and sewed them together. Well, I neglected to take opposable thumbs into account (funny, 'cause we can't sew without them), so the palm was all baggy and nasty. These gloves went into the garbage.
I went looking for a glove pattern and found one from Kwik-Sew, number 2326. This pattern is available from Laceland. Making gloves is not difficult, but it's tricky. You have to be patient and sew carefully. The seams are narrow and there's lots of tight curves. The gloves came out great, although I must say they took as long to make as the entire rest of the dress I was working on.
I'm thinking that if the glove material is sufficiently stretchy, I can combine what I learned about opposable thumbs from the Kwik-Sew pattern with the "trace the hand" method. You'd have to see a real glove pattern to know what I mean...the difficult part of making the gloves was sewing the side pieces into the fingers. If I could eliminate that step it'd be a lot faster and easier to construct the gloves.
